I posted this facebook status last week:
"2 small monkeys just sauntered into my office
like they owned the place. my boss had to escort them out while banging
on his motorbike helmet. oh, india, you make my day."
It almost sounds like a joke – 2 monkeys walk into a bar… –
but no, it was real life. I swear.
On my way home that day, I thought about what my reaction
would have been had that happened 3 months ago when I first arrived in India.
I likely would have stood up from my chair and backed away,
at the very least. Maybe I would have
gasped or thought it surprising.
Instead, this was my reaction as I saw them walk in out of
the corner of my eye:
“Varun, there are monkeys.”
As he stood up to make noises to shoo them away, I laughed
without shame. (It was funny.)
When they left, I said, “Well, that was a first for me.” And
went back to working on my presentation. (Ok, after posting to facebook, of
course.)
Monkeys in the office = no big deal. And since monkeys are my roses, it was kind of
like getting flowers delivered to the office.
Monkeys = big smile.
Oh, the difference a few months makes.
